Teach Design

Michael Yap
I’ve had the desire since my undergraduate studies. In professional practice, the best designers I know teach. I collaborated on a project with the chair of my department and afterwards she invited me to teach at her college. After I received the college’s formal offer I hemmed and hawed as to wether to pursue the opportunity before me; at the last minute I committed. I’m glad I did—it turned out to be a very formative experience.
It was a continual process—I taught for a year and a half and during that time I constantly refined, tweaked and responded to my students.
I lost alot of billable hours to teaching! In the thousands of dollars for sure—but the experiences were worth tenfold.
1. Accept the challenge of teaching
2. Inventory what I know
3. Create curriculums
4. Have them critiqued by peers
5. Observe how others teach
6. Teach and fail
7.Dedicate time to becoming a better teacher
8. Teach and fail
9. Re dedicate myself to becoming a better teacher
10 React to student and peer review
11. Do it all over again
